Influence of Weld Profile on Fatigue of Welded Structural Steel in Seawater
SourceWelded connections are generally recognized as being fatigue critical in the case of engineering systems such as offshore structures. As part of a research program aimed at better understanding how such connections respond to cyclic stresses, ABS DH32 steel plate specimens were fatigued under conditions that approached those experienced by offshore structures. The component of this study reported herein addresses quantification of the weld geometry for selected specimens employed in the program. Additionally, a finite-element analysis was developed from which the elastic stress concentration factor for the weld toe region was projected. The case of undercutting, which was apparent on one specimen that failed prematurely, was also analyzed. Results of this analysis have been evaluated in terms of notch member fatigue theory, and conclusions have been reached regarding those geometrical parameters of welds and undercuts which are most influential with regard to fatigue and corrosion fatigue.
