The Radiation-Induced Decomposition of Some Inorganic Sulfates

The radiation-induced decomposition of Na₂SO₄, Na₂ SO₄10H₂0, MgSO₄7H₂O, ZnSO₄6H₂O, CuSO₂5H₂O, Cr₂SO₄15H₂0, Cr₂SO4 aq., NiSO₄6H₂0, MnSO₄H₂0 and CoSO₄7H₂0 has been studied. Oxidation of the cation occurs only in NiSO₄6H₂0 and MnSO₄H₂0. Reduction of the SO₄⁻⁻ occurs only in NiSO₄6H₂0. The remaining sulfate hydrates decompose to yield H₂ and O₂ only in very low yields. A mechanism is given to explain the observed results.
