A very interesting review of the early history of fire tests was presented at the Fire Test Symposium sponsored by ASTM Committee E-5 on Fire Tests of Materials and Construction in 1961. The concepts that underlie the present standard method for wall and partition assemblies are basically the same as those that formed the foundation of the early test methods. Over the years a number of changes and refinements have been incorporated, but they have not altered the fundamental principles.
