Photoelastic Evaluation of the Panel Shear Test for Plywood

The ASTM panel shear test for plywood was evaluated for shear stress distribution by photoelastic procedures.

Although the shear stress pattern in the test area of the specimen deviated substantially from one of pure shear, the shear stress distributions at the critical sections were remarkably uniform. In this light, it is concluded that the panel shear test is a very accurate method for determining the shear strength of wood panel materials.
