Techniques for Controlling Surface Pitting in Polishing Ceramic Materials
SourceOne of the greatest difficulties in the preparation of polished sections of ceramic materials has been the severe pitting during the primary and intermediate grinding operation. In hard minerals the deeper the pits the greater the time required for their removal. Therefore, techniques and procedures based on the approximate hardness of the minerals present are given so that in 2 to 10 min, specimens of ceramic materials can be prepared for final polishing with a minimum amount of pitting. A final polishing with gamma alumina on a wool cloth produces sufficient relief to differentiate among minerals.
