Experience with Neutron Activation in the Analysis of Aluminum

Generally speaking, aluminum does not lend itself to analysis by neutron activation. The reason for this is readily apparent when one reviews a listing of the radioisotopes of aluminum and observes that aluminum-28 (half-life of 2.3 min) is the main isotopic product resulting from neutron bombardment. The relatively short half-life associated with this isotope disqualifies it from practical consideration for analytical applications unless the investigator is fortunate enough to be in close proximity to a neutron source.
