Source

Among the various methods that have been used to protect wooden waterfront structures from the ravages of marine borers is the practice of scupper nailing. This practice, which originated in ancient times, consists of driving nails, rather closely spaced, into those sections of pilings exposed to marine borer attack. Only in recent times has this procedure been replaced by creosote because of increased effectiveness and for economic reasons.
