This review of the widely used tension testing methods for soft rubber is primarily intended for comparison with other nonmetallic materials. After mentioning some of the reasons for the wide use of these methods the pertinent ASTM definitions are given, followed by a résumé of the ASTM methods used. The equipment and the effects of test conditions are discussed in more detail concluded by a consideration of the possible sources of test error. It is hoped that the reader will thus obtain better insight in the technique of testing this unique material which has only moderate strength, but may elongate 900 per cent before rupture.
