The Preparation and Maintenance of High-Purity Water
SourceIn a nuclear reactor power system (1) using water as a coolant and moderator, high-purity water is a necessity. The preparation and maintenance of high-purity water can be accomplished with ion exchange methods which must be provided as an integral part of the reactor. Ion exchange, as discussed in this paper, is used in reactors to control (1) direct and transport corrosion, (2) water decomposition, (3) induced water radioactivity, and (4) neutron economy. In order to maintain high-purity water, a portion of it is continuously by-passed through a filter and an ion exchange bed to remove insoluble and soluble cations and anions.
