Replica Washing Methods

In the preparation of replicas of surfaces for study in the electron microscope, it is usually necessary at some point to wash the thin replica free of some other material. These materials may be backing films, first replicas, auxiliary supporting films, or even foreign matter and injurious non-volatile liquids. The washing procedure selected must preserve as large an area as possible of the thin replica free of rupture and distortion with as little manipulation of the replica as possible. Some methods, although they are quick, put such a strain on the thin replica that most of it is destroyed. Another method requiring considerable manipulation frequently results in the complete loss of the replica.
