The Production and Uses of Tin Coatings
SourceIn very round figures, it can be said that the United States consumes about half the world's output of tin, and about half of this total is used in the manufacture of tin plate. All but a small fraction of this tin plate is used to pack foods and beverages in the familiar “tin can.” The major use of tin as a coating metal is thus well known to everyone. If, in this review of the applications of tin coatings, more attention is paid to some of its minor uses, the purpose is to redress the balance somewhat and to avoid laboring the obvious point that so far as food packaging is concerned, tin is a very important metal indeed.
