The preparation of county engineering soil maps for Illinois is an outgrowth of a project on the development of an engineering soils manual for the Illinois Division of Highways. The principal aim of this project is to assemble all available data on the physical properties of the surface soils of the state of Illinois in a form which will be useful to the engineers of the Division of Highways. A large amount of soil information is contained in the county agricultural reports for Illinois and in various geological publications. The aim of this project is to combine this information with soil test data obtained by the engineers of the Division of Highways.
