There is a marked tendency in central station design in the direction of higher steam temperatures. Operating temperatures around 850° F. are commonly regarded as standard. Steam temperatures of 900 to 1000° F. are now being considered for a number of projects. Turbines can now be constructed to meet these conditions with good assurance of satisfactory and reliable operation. Much remains to be done in the fields of metallurgy, mechanical testing and design toward the end of securing more economical structures. It is proposed to review briefly the problems that face the turbine constructor in meeting these advanced conditions.
