Measurements of Deformation Behavior of Individual Phases in Composites by X-Ray Diffraction
SourceX-ray diffraction techniques were used to measure the lattice strains in the matrix phase of aluminum-boron composites and both the fiber and matrix of a copper-tungsten composite. The aluminum-boron composites were deformed by bending; the copper-tungsten composite was deformed in tension. The data are presented in terms of both lattice strain and stress as a function of macroscopic composite strain in the principal stress direction. This X-ray technique is shown to be useful in providing the data necessary to compare composite material theory.
