Over the past 15 years the Army has been very active in the field of extremepressure gear lubricants. The requirements of military ground vehicles cover a broad range, from passenger cars through the heaviest types of both over-the-highway and cross-country or off-road vehicles. The need for simplified logistics dictates that, where possible, a single, multipurpose gear oil should be used in all types of gear boxes and rear axles where extreme-pressure properties are normally required. This paper reviews the progress that has been made to achieve this goal.
