Effect of Lubricant on Automatic Transmission Clutch Plate Durability

Source

Clutch plate durability in an automatic transmission has been correlated with fluid-clutch plate coefficient of friction and clutch energy absorption. These values were computed from measurements taken during the dynamometer operation of a conventional engine and automatic transmission combination. The variables measured for these computations were transmission output shaft torque, output shaft speed, clutch drum speed, and clutch-apply pressure.
