Significant developments in turbine oils over the past 20 years and the important contributions to this field made by ASTM are reviewed. The impact of new technological and machine trends on the requirements of future oils are also discussed. The increasing use of nuclear power, the desirability of fire-resistant fluids, and the impact of gas turbines are all important considerations for the future. As in the past, ASTM will undoubtedly be called upon to assist in the achievement of future objectives.
