The Royal Canadian Navy’s experience with enhanced load-carrying type (EP) steam turbine lubricating oils began in 1951 when the main machinery for the “St. Laurent” class destroyer escorts was undergoing prototype shore trials in the United Kingdom. Fleet experience with these oils commenced in 1955 when the first ship of the class, HMCS “St. Laurent,” was commissioned. The choice of an EP type oil instead of a conventional rust- and oxidation-inhibited oil for the lubrication of the main machinery was dictated by the type of main reduction gearing installed in the early ships of the class.
