For the manufacture of synthetic rubber it is important to have 1,3-butadiene available in the highest degree of purity. (Unless ambiguous, 1,3-butadiene will be referred to as butadiene throughout this chapter.) Some of the possible impurities, such as peroxides, are so undesirable that a suitable inhibitor must be added to freshly made butadiene to guard against their formation. It is also desirable to know the butadiene content of refinery streams from which the concentrated product is made.
