It is important that petroleum products be noncorrosive, and remain so during service. Crude petroleum usually contains traces of sulfur compounds, the greater portion of which are generally removed during refining, lest they cause corrosive tendencies in the refined product. Particular attention is given to the control of sulfur content in solvents and in fuels for internal combustion engines or fuel oils for various household and industrial heating appliances. For fuels, the products of combustion contain compounds that are corrosive or become corrosive in the presence of moisture.
