Chapter 5 Oxidation Characteristics

Products of oxidation are generally present whenever a petroleum product deteriorates in service or storage. In some types of service the oxidation conditions are quite severe and the ability of the product to resist chemical change by oxidation becomes important. Accordingly several Standards are available for determining the oxidation characteristics of petroleum products. Some of the Standards are of the accelerated type for testing the oxidation resistance of products, usually when freshly prepared. Each of the accelerated Standards is for a specific class of products. In addition, there is Standard D 381 for the determination of gum or nonvolatile residue that may be found in a sample of fresh or aged gasoline. There is also Standard D 893 for determining insoluble oxidation products and contamination in used lubricating oils. These Standards and their significance are discussed under the following headings:
