The Effect of a Coating of Polybutene on the Fatigue Properties of Lead Alloys
SourceThe experiments described in this publicationwere inspired by the Bell System'slarge interest in lead-alloy sheathed cablesand by the wide range of fatigue andcorroding conditions to which they aresometimes subjected in service. The firstexperiments consisted of operating specimensof lead + 1 per cent antimony telephonecable sheath alloy in a fatigue testwhile they were immersed in water takenfrom a manhole. Because of many publishedreports concerning corrosion-fatiguephenomena of various metals and alloys,a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1).the form of a coating, was found to adhereto the specimens better than most othersand to have a large effect on fatigue properties. For this reason, the effect of thismaterial was studied more completely andthe results form the chief subject matterof this paper.
