Stress-Corrosion Testing of Magnesium Alloys

Tests to evaluate correctly the stress-corrosion sensitivity of magnesium alloys have been recently carried out in this country. In Germany, Siebel(1)2 studied the stress cracking of Electron AZM alloy, but concluded that despite its sensitivity in laboratory tests, actual service data had shown it to be a very satisfactory material. As an example, he cites the results of quarterly inspections over a period of 6 yr. of magnesium subassemblies used on two airplanes. A satisfactory condition of all parts was maintained. Beck(2), Graff(3), and others have reported extensive research that has been conducted in Germany throughout the past 10 yr. on the stress-corrosion resistance of a variety of magnesium alloys.
