The primary function of lubricants is to increase the efficiency of machinery by reducing friction and wear. Secondary functions include the dissipation of heat and removal of contaminants. Fluid lubricants are difficult to retain at the point of application and must be replenished frequently. If, however, a fluid lubricant is thickened, its retention is improved. A lubricating grease is simply a lubricating fluid which has been gelled by means of a thickening agent so that it may be retained more readily in the required area.
