While crude oil occurs underground in most of the world, its origin continues to be the subject of speculation by scientists. Crude oils are organic in nature and made up of combinations of carbon and hydrogen with lesser amounts of sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and traces of vanadium, nickel, and other metals. The compounds of carbon and hydrogen are complex but are principally paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic. Any given crude oil consists of thousands of compounds, its complexity increasing with the boiling range of the oil.
