Fundamental Study of Metal Matrix Composites
SourceAn experimental investigation of certain fundamental factors governing the strength of filament-reinforced metal matrix composites was conducted. The matrix candidates were aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel, and titanium. The filament candidates were boron, molybdenum and steel. Three test specimen configurations for the evaluation of the effects of filament-to-matrix reactions in composite structures were developed and verified. Preliminary data are presented for various filamentmatrix combinations. Data are included on the effects of the fabrication process, filament surface preparation, filament overlap distance, filament spacing, and filament diameter.
