Radiography with Thulium Sources

Source

Two types of thulium sources have been developed at Argonne National Laboratory. One consists of 200 mg of thulium oxide contained in aluminum foil 1 mil thick, and the other is a thulium metal cylinder 1/8 in. in diameter and 1/4 in. long. Each source is placed in a metal housing which provides adequate shielding for the radiations emitted by the source. The complete unit, as shown in Fig. 1, is 6 in. in diameter, 7 in. high, and weighs about 20 lb. The constructional details of the exit window and the rotor drive for exposures are given in Fig. 2.
