Abrasive wear is one of the most critical and costly problems faced by an industrial economy. Since 1950 a great deal of empirical and theoretical knowledge has been developed, but impediments seem to exist which hinder the transfer of this information either among researchers or among those who have need of it. It is partially to remedy this situation that the present review of theoretical and empirical findings is offered.
