The author discusses the various uses of organic acids in the preparation and maintenance of stainless steels. Included is a review of the fundamental properties of organic acids, and a discussion of the methods of use in acid and alkaline cleaning, electropolishing, and the application of oxalate coatings. Emphasis is placed on providing a state-of-the-art survey of these current and potential uses of organic acids.
