Fire and Smoke Invasion of Apartments

Source

This paper describes the results of three similar tests which were conducted in a new 22-story apartment building. The tests had two objectives: (1) to study the flow of smoke, such as that produced by a typical apartment fire, into the hallways, stairwell, and elevator shafts and (2) to study the effectiveness of ventilation methods in removing smoke and making evacuation possible. The tests were directed by the Scientific and Technical Center for Buildings (CSTB) and were conducted in close collaboration with the Paris Fire Brigade and the Ministry of the Interior. Suggestions are made for further research into the problems of smoke removal, evacuation, and design of equipment.
