Viscometry of Polymer Solutions in a Coaxial-Cylinder Viscometer under High Rates of Shear

The design and operation of a coaxial-cylinder viscometer that permits measurements over a range of shear rate up to 96,000 reciprocal seconds are described. Principal design features are: stator cylinder mounting on an air bearing; circulation of temperature-controlling liquid through both rotor and stator; narrow annular width (0.15 mm); automatic programing of shear rate as a function of time; and automatic recording of shear stress versus shear rate, or shear stress versus time of shear at constant shear rate. A resume of experimental results on various polymer solutions is given.
