A Physical Interpretation of Coal Sampling Variances with Application to Sample Reduction

A physical interpretation may be applied to the statistical variances calculated from coal sampling data by relating one of them to a randomly mixed portion of the coal, and the other to a segregated portion. Use of general weightconsist relations makes it possible to extend this interpretation to sample reduction. The importance of assuring a sufficient degree of mixing in the gross sample is discussed and emphasized.
