The Southern Pacific Co. in cooperation with the Standard Oil Co. of California initiated a program in August, 1957, to study the factors that influence wear in diesel locomotives. Because a large number of variables were involved in the study, the irradiated ring test technique was chosen.⁴ It is the purpose of this paper to describe the test procedure used on locomotives, to discuss the radiation hazards involved, and to present a statistical study of test precision.
