In the early days, when petroleum products were comparatively inexpensive and the demand was small, the importance of accurate measurement was relatively minor. However, as the value and quantity of petroleum products increased, the necessity of accurate gaging became increasingly important. Another factor that increased the value of accurate gaging was the construction of larger diameter storage tanks. In a small diameter tank a ¼ in. difference in liquid level would represent only a small number of gallons. The same liquid-level difference in a larger diameter tank could mean several hundred gallons.
