Corrosion is a problem of international importance because it affects public safety and is costly. The problem has escalated due to a number of factors including an increasing demand on the performance of materials and increasingly aggressive environments. Examples used to demonstrate the magnitude of the problem include: (1) deterioration of the infrastructure; (2) effects on transportation; (3) underground corrosion; (4) reliability of electrical and electronics equipment; and (5) concern over the fate of outdoor artistic and historic works. Corrosion testing and evaluation play an important part in solving corrosion problems. Typical concerns are listed, and the importance of planning and preparation is emphasized.
