Direct aqueous injection gas chromatography is shown to have practical applications in the analysis of low molecular weight volatile organic compounds in water and waste waters. Many such compounds cannot be extracted or concentrated by more conventional solvent methods due to evaporation losses. Detection limits below 1 mg/ liter are possible. Freeze concentration may be used to lower this limit by a factor of 10 to 20 for more dilute solutions. Applications are described including the analysis of methanol and aircraft deicer components in domestic sewage.
