Monitoring Trace Metal Particulates: An Evaluation of the Sampling and Analysis Problems

A critique of current methods of monitoring trace metal particulates is presented in which sources of error in both the sample collection and analysis processes are pointed out. Results indicating that membrane-type filters are inefficient for collection of particulates in certain size ranges are presented and discussed. Possible problems with commonly used sample preparation and analysis procedures are pointed out and general recommendations for the elimination of these problems are made.
