Automatic instrumentation has evolved over the years to analyze the atmosphere for total hydrocarbon concentration, classes of hydrocarbons, and specific hydrocarbons. This paper deals with principles of analysis of commercial automated instruments—their performance, calibration, application, and impact on assisting our past, present, and future capability for measuring hydrocarbons.
