Selection of Continuous Sulfur Dioxide Monitors for Ambient and Source Concentration Levels

Each SO₂ monitoring situation possesses characteristics which may imply the selection of a particular sulfur dioxide (SO₂) detection principle. Total sample concentration, SO₂ concentration range, measurement accuracy, and available manpower to operate and maintain equipment are used as criteria to select a general method of detection from which a specific monitor may be chosen. A table is included, listing principle methods of continuous SO₂ detection, their basic characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages. Technical problems of source level SO₂ monitoring are discussed and the concept of a complete source sampling and analyzing system is proposed.
