Construction beyond the Continental Shelf
SourceThe deeper parts of the ocean have been referred to as exotic in the sense that they are strange and unknown. Perhaps a more definitive word is hostile, because what is dealt with is in many ways an adverse environment. For the civil engineer or the construction engineer or, more specifically, the soils engineer, it is an area in which many of his conventional and familiar (and comfortable) tools and techniques are denied.
