The building public is rapidly becoming conscious of the necessity of designing structures for lateral forces. On the Pacific Coast we have experienced major destructive earthquakes and the presumption is that they will reoccur. The Midwest has recently experienced several cyclones and the East and South have suffered hurricanes. The deficiency of certain types of structures under these adverse forces has been graphically demonstrated to the public.
