Abundant quantities of oxide of iron, usually in combination with alumina, silica, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and water, have been and are to be found widely distributed over the crust of the earth. These ores usually have a brown, reddish brown, red, yellow, or black hue. They occur in pockets or veins and where these pockets or veins come to the surface of the earth they are usually easily identified as they stand out in contrast with the other earths surrounding them.
