For quantitative measurements of adhesion in coating-substrate combinations, the means most often used at Sandia Laboratories are ring shear, conical-head tension, and I-beam tension tests. Details presented for each test include specimen size, shape, and preparation, and the manner in which the test is performed. The pros and cons of each test are discussed in the light of substantial practical experience, and data for the various deposit-substrate combinations are included.
