Suggested Methods of Test for Hydrogen Ion Concentration (pH) of Soils

This method is intended for use in determining the hydrogen ion concentration, designated as pH, of soils by either the electrical or colorimetric methods. The pH of a solution is equal to the common logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion concentration of the solution, or, pH = log 1/1 hydrogen ion concentration. The selection of this unit was made so that the hydrogen ion concentration could be reported using simple whole numbers. It measures the actual hydrogen ion concentration of a solution and not the total acidity or alkalinity as determined by the usual titration methods.
