This method describes a procedure for field measurement of the rate of infiltration using double-ring infiltrometers. Rates determined by ponding of large areas are considered most reliable, but the high cost of ponding makes the infiltrometer-ring method more feasible. Many factors affect the infiltration rate; absolute values for a particular type of sediment are probably nonexistent. Thus, tests made at different times on the same site are not likely to give identical results and the measured rate determined by this method is primarily for comparative use. This method is difficult to use in very coarse or heavyclay soils, or in frozen ground.
