This method (Note 1) is intended to provide calculated values for the maximum density and optimum moisture content for the total soil, when the moisture-density relations test is made on the portion of the soil passing either a No. 4 (4760-micron) or a ¾-in. sieve. These calculated values for maximum density and optimum moisture content for the total soil are required for comparison with the measured values for the density and moisture content of a layer of the soil undergoing compaction in the field.
