Fracture Toughness Testing of Small and Standard Bending Specimens

This work deals with an alternative possibility of performing fracture mechanics testing with small Charpy impact specimens in the same manner as for large, three-point bend-type specimens. The procedure is based upon the determination of J_i, which claims that the J-integral for fracture resistance at stable crack propagation initiation is a characteristic value of the material. It is shown that the results of the application of this procedure are promising in the cases of brittle fracture and brittle/ductile transition.
