Patellofemoral Pain in Alpine Skiing
SourceSix in a group of 15 elite female skiers, median age 16 (15 to 17) years, suffered patellofemoral pain after altering their giant slalom technique to comply with that of the Norwegian World Cup team. The aim of this study is to describe and compare the new and old techniques and relate them to patellofemoral biomechanics. The new and old techniques were evaluated on the slope by a video camera from different angles and then computerized and analyzed. Any patellofemoral pathology or rotational or torsional abnormalities of the femur and tibia were recorded by computer tomography (CT). An increased degree of vertical movement and knee flexion was observed with the new technique. The CT-scan showed no patellofemoral incongruence or torsional abnormalities in any of the skiers. The patellofemoral pain of these skiers seemed to be due to overloading of the knee rather than to misalignment.
