Comment on “Intense-field Effects in Solids”

Recent theoretical work by Jones and Reiss predict that the effective energy gap of a crystalline solid in the presence of electromagnetic radiation increases with radiation intensity. Thus, at sufficiently great intensities higher order multiphoton processes could become more probable than lower order processes. It is shown that, although this behavior contradicts the well-known perturbative results in the low intensity region, it appears to be confirmed by the experimental data on GaP at 0.694 μm, due to Pyshkin et al. Theoretical and experimental results regarding the intensities needed for the observation of this phenomenon are compared, and its implications for nonlinear optics are discussed.
