Bituminous coatings are used on surfaces to reduce or eliminate the destructive effects of weather, chemicals, and water vapor. They are also used as sound deadeners, to provide resistance to heat transfer, and to provide abrasive coatings to minimize slip hazards. Their consistency may range from that of water to a putty-like material, or to a solid that must be heated to over 200 F (93.3 C) before they are sufficiently fluid to use.
